The interior of the coin, designed by Helmut Andexlinger of the Austrian Mint and chosen by eurozone citizens and residents as the 2012 common commemorative coin, features the world in the form of the euro symbol at the center, showing how the euro has become a true global player over the past ten years.

The surrounding elements symbolize the importance of the euro to ordinary people (represented by a family group), to the financial world (Eurotower), to trade (a ship), to industry (a factory), and to the energy sector and research and development (two wind turbines). The designer's initials "AH" can be found (if you look very closely) between the ship and the Eurotower. Along the top and bottom edges of the coin's interior are the country of issue and the years "2002–2012," respectively. The coin will be issued by all eurozone countries. The outer ring of the coin depicts the 12 stars of the European Union.
